Hi COBirders,

To tag onto Mike Henwood's report on the Blue Grosbeak fledging I have an
anecdote, as well.

In August 2009 I helped Brian Gibbons at Chico Basin Ranch at the RMBO banding
station (El Paso Co). We opened August 31 that year. I don't have the exact
date, (but I don't think it was the first day - so at least August 31, maybe as
late as September 3) when we had a juvenile Blue Grosbeak land in a net. That
is itself isn't too unusual, but what is is that it couldn't fly yet! It
wasn't injured, it just wasn't ready. All we could surmise is that an unseen
nest was above us somewhere and it fluttered in. That had to be close to it's
fledge date, and it seemed REAL late to us then, too. I'm also not positive we
banded it considering it's age and status, but the records could probably be
found if anyone wanted to know for sure.
