I went over to Cottonwood Hollow along east Prospect Road in Fort Collins
over my lunch hour today. On the way into the natural area, I bumped into
Larry Griffin who was on his way out. Sorry Larry, it appears you were
about 20 minutes too early. I found one of the Swamp Sparrows along the
flowing ditch/canal that is east of Artists Point Pond (or what's left of
it). It was approximately 60-70 yards south of the culvert flowing from
Artists Point Pond to the ditch/canal. At first things were very silent,
but after
about 15-20 minutes of standing still along the ditch and not making any
noise except for an occasional spish every 3-4 minutes, I heard a different
chip note to my
left. When I went to investigate, the Swamp Sparrow was chipping frequently
and at one point flew up to the top of a cattail stalk for several seconds
before diving back
into the cattails and going silent. I also had a silent bird about 100
yards south of the culvert that dove into brush on the east side of the
ditch and would not come
back out and would not call, so I don't know what that was except it did
not act or respond as a Song Sparrow would.
