Hi all.Happy holidays.

We completed our annual Christmas Bird Count at the Monte Vista NWR on Dec 15th
and had 15 persons participate. We divided into four teams and took quantrants.
The count was held a day after a 6 inch snowfall, and some folks could not
attend. Anyway, we found 44 species which is about average. The record remains
63 species.

The best birds included Merlin and Prairie Falcons, Northern Shrike,
Pied-billed Grebe, Sandhill Cranes, Gray-crowned and Brown Rosy-finches
(Conejos Cty), Great Blue Heron and Killdeer. Notable miss included no Great
tailed grackles, which is a surprise since they are often seen in MV raiding
dogfood bowls. Tree Sparrows seemed unusually high, but have not been able to
review the past data to be certain.

A great day out counting birds and sharing the spirit of the season.
