The first morning of the New Year was quite cold here in Huerfano County. We decided to walk our dog, Scooter, around Martin Lake at Lathrop State Park in spite of the chilly temperature. Hundreds of American Robins and dozens of Townsend's Solitaire's were flying about Close to 100 Mountain Bluebirds and 15-20 Western Bluebirds were seen A tree full of Evening Grosbeaks with 2 Cedar Waxwings was found at Horseshoe Res. Cannot remember when we have seen Evening Grosbeaks at Lathrop before today. A Lone Bald Eagle was seen 2 Great Blue Herons Many Dark-eyed Juncos were fluttering about Perhaps the most unusual sighting, for us, was of a Great Horned Owl being persistently pestered by an adult Cooper's Hawk. We first spotted the owl and I was sneaking through the brush for a photo op, when the Cooper's Hawk lit on the same branch about 10 feet from the owl and began calling and calling. It succeeded in driving the owl from it's roost and chased it to a nearby tree, where it continued it's non-stop scolding. The Cooper's Hawk finally departed leaving behind a very disgruntled looking Great Horned Owl.
