The flickers are drumming, the goldfinches are turning bright yellow, and
soon reports of bluebirds returning from their wintering grounds will start
lighting up Cobirds.

The Colorado Bluebird Project operates under the auspices of the
Audubon Society of Greater Denver. We facilitate the work of nestbox trail
managers around the state in several ways, one of which is by helping them
find
new monitors when old ones retire. We currently have requests for help for
the upcoming season from three trail managers: one at Cherokee Ranch
(Tweet Kimball's "castle" property) near Sedalia, one near Larkspur, and one
in
KenCaryl Valley Ranch which is tucked in behind the hogback west of C470 (I
think it's officially part of Littleton). These trails usually start
monitoring in late March/early April and go through August. We also have a
dormant trail in the northeast corner of the state, near Ovid & Julesburg,
that we'd love to see rejuvenated. It's one of the few places where we always
had Eastern bluebirds.

Monitoring is usually a weekly activity, you simply open up each
nestbox, peek in, and briefly document what you see. It's a wonderful
opportunity to get up close and personal with the birds. Monitors usually
work in
teams of 2 or 3, so if you're a novice you'll be paired up with experienced
people. Also, since it's a team effort no one person has to be there every
single week. It ain't rocket science, nearly anyone can do it and it
doesn't take much experience to become proficient.
