Where: Colorado Division of Wildlife, 4255 Sinton Road, Colorado Springs -

Program: Presented by Lee Derr

Chico Basin Ranch is one of the largest remaining contiguous sections of
short-grass prairie in the region. It encompasses part of the historic Cherokee
Trail and has a history that includes many interesting stories and
personalities. The colorful history of ranching is integral to the longstanding
preservation and current ranching practices are a key to ecosystem success. The
meandering of water via springs, ponds and the Chico Creek make it one of the
most successful bird habitats and banding stations in the Rocky Mountain Bird
Observatory service area.

Biologist and Educator Lee Derr will lead a program on this unique ranch
including its ownership, history, current efforts to preserve native habitat,
relationship with RMBO and its efforts to provide public access. Each migratory
season nearly 1000 local students have their first introduction to bird
migration, prairie ecology, and the importance of ranching when they visit the
Chico.

This evening is also our annual “Death by Chocolate” potluck dessert. Bring
your favorite chocolate dessert or treat to share. Mmmm… chocolate!

Hope to see you there!
