Call for 2013 DFO Grant Applications

Attention all COBIRD members! Through the many very generous donations
given by the membership of the Denver Field Ornithologists, the DFO Research,
Education, and Conservation Fund has $5000 available for grants in 2013.
Grants will be awarded for projects that encourage the study, appreciation,
and/or the preservation of birds and their habitats. Members, please share
this information with anyone you can think of who might have a worthy project
in mind and have them check out the DFO Grants web pages at
www.dfobirders.org.

The DFO board has already awarded its first grant of 2013! The board
awarded $2000 to Kris Haglund and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science
Archives Dept. for the Bailey Film Project. This exciting project will
re-create
two of Dr. Alfred M. Bailey’s most memorable film lectures: the Alaskan
Album (1964) and the Hawaiian Album exploring the Hawaiian Archipelago from the
“big island” of Hawaii all the way out to Midway (1962). The museum’s
ever popular film-lecture series, held for many years in Phipps Auditorium,
often consisted of Dr. Bailey lecturing to the audience while a 16mm silent
film was running in the background. The audio portion of the lecture was
recorded live on 1⁄4” audiotape. This project will reunite the film and
sound (Bailey’s original narration) in a digital format that will give the
viewer the experience of sitting in that lecture for the first time.
