I know many of you are still wondering about the white crane that was found at the MV Refuge a few weeks ago. Since I reported it on COBIRDS, it seems to have generated quite a bit of chat in the chat rooms.
A good friend of mine, Michael Forsberg, presented some photos of the Monte Vista white crane to Mr. George Archibald, Co-founder of the International Crane Foundation, and preeminent crane biologist. Here is what Mr. Archibald reported to Michael. The white crane is indeed a leucistic Sandhill (looks like a lesser), and he said in his experience has never seen one with a mate or other juveniles. The white crane only stayed a short time and is no longer being seen, so far as I know.
