Spent a hour birding around Prospect pond , Wheatridge greenbelt, on a
gray, cold, breezy afternoon today. Weather was miserable, but birds
(both variety and numbers) were great. In addition to the usual ducks,
there were two Blue-winged Teal. Shorebirds included both Yellowlegs
(14 total, most Greater), 2 snipe, and six Wilson's Phalaropes. Gulls
included Bonaparte's (3) and Franklins (14) plus the usual Ring-bills.
Two Say's Phoebes were the only flycatchers. I estimate there were at
least 75 bluebirds, about evenly divided between Mountain and Western,
lots or robins, a Sage Thrasher, a couple of Vesper Sparrows, and
Red-winged, Yellow-headed, and Brewer's Blackbirds. Surprisingly, there
were no swallows.
