We drove from our house to the post office, on Willow Lake, Castlewood Canyon,
& Walker roads in Franktown this morning - about 7 miles. In an hour & a half,
we counted, including our feeder birds, 580 birds of 54 species along the roads
-- almost half of them thrushes. The snow seemed to draw the passerines to the
edges of the roads. The bluebird & thrush show amazed us.
The count included:
169 robins;
5 Eastern, 54 Western, & 35 Mountain Bluebirds;
1 Hermit Thrush.
Also several shorebirds: 7 Killdeer, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Wilson's Snipe, 4
Wilson's Phalaropes, 5 Am. Pipits;
9 species of ducks;
1 Brewer's Blackbird;
1 Am. Tree Sparrow & 3 Chipping Sparrows in the same binocular field;
our usual feeder birds, in fairly large numbers.
The snow continues to fall -- and the feeder birds continue to scarf up seeds
and squabble about the bounty.
