Birders,
First, I'd like to thank Mark Peterson for posting my morning report of
a male Blackburnian Warbler at Van's Grove on Road JJ 1 1/2 miles east
of Road 16. Although I saw it twice this morning, it eluded two parties
that looked for a short while. How a tiny bird that prefers hiding in
dense leaf clusters in the canopy can be hard to spot is beyond me! I
did hear it sing three times this morning, a huge clue to locating it.
I misplaced the rain guard for my binoculars while at Van's Grove this
morning, and returned to look for (and successfully find) them at 2 p.m.
Naturally, the Blackburnian Warbler was easily detected, this time by
listening for the high, almost inaudible call notes.
A few other species were present that may be of local interest. This
morning, two Willow Flycatchers called back and forth. This afternoon, a
male Indigo Bunting and a male hybrid Indigo x Lazuli Bunting were present.
We'll, it's back to the old salt mine for me. I did see my first Least
Tern of the year at John Martin Reservoir this morning, the latest
return date in over 20 years of monitoring this species.
