David Dowell and I had an excellent day of birding in Logan and Sedgwick Counties. We started at Tamarack Ranch SWA (Logan), birding both east and west of Hwy 385 We had some of the usual species in most unusual numbers 15 Bell's Vireos 30+ Northern Cardinals 15+ Red-bellied Woodpeckers We also had some of the usual species in more mundane numbers 2 Field Sparrows 4 Yellow-billed Cuckoos Among the surprises were 2 AMERICAN REDSTARTS and a VIRGINIA'S WARBLERS w. of 385. East of 385 and west of "The Pond" (see CFO- that is, Colorado Field Ornithologists' - Birding by County website) we had a female EASTERN TOWHEE and a male HOODED WARBLER (sorry, there is no way to give more specific directions to these birds). ON 385, between the two parking roads (the one heading east and west), we had an immature KRIDER'S RED-TAILED HAWK. The birding at Tamarack is intimidating. The area is vast, and it is filled with birdsongn (50+ Orchard Orioles, House Wrens, and Yellow Warblers). Soon, it will also be filled with Poison Ivy (springing up like March Hares) and mosquitos (first nibbles already felt). Also, Baltimore Orioles are not scarce and towhees are everywhere. But for both the orioles and the towhees, hybrids (Baltimore x Bullock's; Spotted x Eastern), the hybrids seem to outnumber "pure" birds. Jumbo Reservoir (Logan and Sedgwick Counties) was essentially bird-free and boat-filled; we did have a very tardy LESSER CANADA GOOSE in among a throng of Big Ugly Canada Geese in the Logan side. At Ovid, Sedgwick County, we had a Cordilleran Flycatcher in "the woods." - see CFO Website In the town of Julesburg, we had a singing EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE in the alley between 4th and 5th, just north of Maple near the Yard of Three Tiresomely Barking Dogs. Julesburg, by the way, is in Sedgwick County. It was a lovely warm day, and though passerines were hard to come by at "migrant traps," Tamarack Ranch made up for all of that with its truly astounding bounty. If this post "sounds" a bit irritated, it is. I don't post to "hear my own voice." I can do plenty of that by torturing my friends. If you are frustrated by my posts, just hit yonder delete button.
