This year we tried something exciting for our spring big day count. We asked
for pledges from our San Luis Valley network of bird people for each species we
(a team of 4 people) counted. The response was immense and more than 20
individuals and organizations participated. We may be small in number down here
but the birders have big hearts I can tell you that.

So four of us...Jerry Poe, Lisa Clements, John Stump and myself ventured out
and had a day full of exciting birds. Barn Owl, Stilt Sandpipers, Burrowing
Owl, Lewis’s Woodpecker, Red-naped Sapsucker, Sanderlings, and Black-throated
Gray Warbler were some of the highlites. We got rained on in the last 2 hours
of the day, but still kept birding right up to dark. Total for the day...131
species (third highest SLV big day).

Our efforts raised over $660 for the Monte Vista Food Bank. The Food Bank was
recently broken into, and the burglars took valuable computer equipment which
had to be replaced. So I know our donation will help them restore themselves so
they can better serve those in need.
