Every year on the Saturday after Memorial Day I try to lead a group out to the
Pawnee Grasslands. Today I had a great time with a 13 person trip over a
full-day (13 hour) out there. We had a pretty good time starting at Crow
Valley Campground early on, even in fairly extreme wind. Crow had a couple of
concentrations of migrants in sheltered spots including a Redstart,
Black-headed Grosbeak, Gray Catbird, Least Flycatcher, Veery (Tina Jones) and
lots of Swainson's Thrushes. One interesting treat was an interesting
Bullock's/Baltimore Oriole male hybrid. Later at the old Red Phalarope spot
from 7 years ago, we had great looks at about 20 McCown's, but no
Chestnut-collared (that's everybody's experience on the Pawnee anymore) plus
several Burrowing Owls. Finally we hit Loloff Reservoir for 9 shorebird
species including great looks at the 3 usual late migrants, Stilt Sandpiper.,
Red-necked Phalarope. and White-rumped Sandpiper.
