This morning at about 7:00 I had a quick glance at a presumed Eastern
Meadowlark, then heard a bird sing the eastern song repeatedly. This was
shortly before David Waltman's visit to the spot produced better views. Then
just past noon, John Vanderpoel called with news that Christian Nunes had
discovered a Least Bittern at Sawhill Ponds. I rushed over, arriving at about
12:45 to join John and David Dowell in viewing the bird.

The Least was along the southeast bank of the pond in the NE Corner of the
Sawhill part of Walden/Sawhill off 75th St. in Boulder just south of Boulder
Creek. Although right out in the open and mostly standing still in typical
bittern fashion, the bird was actively foraging and caught at least one fish
while we watched. To get to the right pond either start in the Sawhill parking
lot, follow around the south edge of the first pond until a fork in the trail.
Then take the path to the right to the area of the duck blind. From the Walden
parking lot at Cottonwood Marsh, walk on the road west and bear left once
you've gotten beyond Duck Pond to enter into Sawhill. Follow along the east
bank of that first pond in Sawhill.

The irony of these two observations is that I just returned from an extended
weekend back east to Ohio and Florida. While I wasn't allowed much time to
bird, two species I actively sought out, but failed to find, were Eastern
Meadowlark and Least Bittern.
