John Vanderpoel and I were lucky enough to spot the Manitou Lake Sandwich Tern
as we drove up from Woodland Park in the early afternoon. As we were watching
it forage successfully over the small pond west of CO 67, we almost saw the
bird's demise as it dropped a small food item it had just caught right in front
of a big pick-up that was barreling down the highway. Fortunately, discretion
by the tern was the better part of valor!

We then went down to Big Johnson Reservoir near Security where we found the
birds posted by Mark Peterson the other day-Pacific Loon, Laughing Gull and
(one) Lesser Black-backed Gull.
