Subject: [cobirds] Friday 5th Rocky Mountain N.P trip

Hi cobirders My son Bob and his wife Sandra took me to Rocky Mtn National Park Friday. We arrive there 11 AM. Went to the west end picnic area west of the huge rock fall of the Lawn Lake flood. This area had several sapsuckers of both species flying around. They found a nest hole in an Aspen being attended by a pair of Williamson's Sapsuckers. They set the telescope up about 100 feet away from the nest site. After lunch I went there and while watching a yellow bird flew into a large evergreen tree to my left. I looked at it with binoculars and it was a Western Tanager a male with
its bright red. My first this year.
Still watching in the telescope a male ducked his head well into the nest hole and he took it out I could see the white head pattern and the red throat patch and the yellow
on the belly before it flew down and away.

We went up on Trail Ridge where almost all the snow was gone and the tundra very green. Very windy and cool 50 degrees outside. Storm was passing with a little rain.
We did not see Gray Jays, Clark's Nutcrackers or Ptarmigan .

Great day surrounded by wonderful scenery.
