I recently got home from a visit to the Bosque del Apache NWR where I got to watch the RUFOUS-NECKED WOOD-RAIL on 6 days. More than 20 Colorado birders also drove to New Mexico to see the bird and most did. It is still being seen but it is being absent for long periods of time (sometimes more than 24 consecutive hours) on a more frequent basis and has only been seen for brief periods in past few days. If anyone is still planning to go down it would be a good idea to allow more than 24 hours there if at all possible in case the bird continues these long absences. Besides the Wood-Rail, there were up to 5 Least Bitterns and up to 3 Green Herons foraging out in the OPEN in the area where the Wood-Rail has been--quite astounding out in the middle of the water away from the cattails! There are a lot of other interesting birds at the Refuge and in the area as noted in other posts. I photographed the Wood-Rail and did get some very nice still photos and interesting video of the bird that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog. <http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/> I have found that Youtube is compressing videos and reducing the quality-they are still nice but just not quite as sharp as the original. Unfortunately I probably need to post them on my blog via Youtube-so if anyone knows of anything I can do to avoid these loss of sharpness please let me know-very frustrating.
