Judy Lane and I went for a hike this morning in Staunton St Park (Jefferson Co).

While looking at an unnamed Empid we were distracted by a perched Broad-tailed
Hummingbird. After perching for a while the hummingbird flew off to his left.
He did this a couple of times. Then we realized that he was buzzing at a gray
blob on a branch about 6 feet from him. The gray blob turned out to be a very
sleepy fledgling Flammulated Owl. Fabulous views from about 20 ft away. Not
sure if this has been a verified or recorded breeder in Staunton SP. Bob
Shade, who has run BB surveys there is going to check.

Great bird. And to think, we were going mainly for a good hike and I so I
originally left my binos in the car, then after 50 yards reconsidered and went
back to get them.
