COBirders, Given the multiple reports of large numbers of Chipping Sparrows this year, both in spring migration and now, I'm puzzled that we have had none at our cabin in northwest Custer County where we spend several days each week. They have regularly been common summer residents there for the last forty years, and while they flooded Pueblo City Park for a couple of days this spring, they have been absent 65 miles to the west and +4,500 feet in elevation. Has anyone noticed an unusual drop-off in numbers in other areas of our state?
Note: Yes, at our cabin it was unusually dry again this year and a Mountain Bluebird pair failed to produce eggs after a month in their nest box, but a pair of Cordilleran Flycatchers raised four fledglings without leaving the close proximity of their nest on our deck and the House Wrens also fledged from their nest box. Numbers of other avian species appeared to be close to normal, with Common Ravens slowly increasing in population after a serious decline in 2005-2010.
