Highlight species include (* indicates new information on this species in this report): LEAST BITTERN (Morgan) Glossy Ibis (Morgan) Long-billed Curlew, Black-bellied and Snowy Plovers (Alamosa*) Caspian Tern (Larimer) ALAMOSA COUNTY: --Rawinski reported a good variety of shorebirds at Blanca Wetlands on August 9,including Long-billed Curlew, Baird’s, Least and Semi-palmated Sandpipers, 2 Black-bellied Plovers, Snowy Plover, and 6 Black-necked Stilts. LARIMER COUNTY: -- A Caspian Tern (perhaps the same one seen by Mlodinow a few weeks ago) was reported on August 5 by Leatherman at Kechter Pond, distantly viewable to the southeast from Strauss Cabin Road at a pulloff about a mile south of Harmony Road. . MORGAN COUNTY: -- Two or more LEAST BITTERNS were reported on August 7 by Mlodinow, one calling, one seen, at area 12 in Andrick Ponds. Parking is permitted along the entry road to Jackson SP before entering park proper. From there walk about 30 minutes to reach the bittern site. DFO FIELD TRIPS The DFO Field Trip for Sunday, August 11 will be to Cherry Creek SP Wetlands Loop led by Karen vonSaltza (cell: 303-941-4881). Approximately 3 miles walk (half day) conducted on the second Sunday of each month to explore the Wetlands area of Cherry Creek SP. Meet at the Prairie Loop at 0800. The walk is on park trails but can become muddy and slippery during periods of inclement weather. Dress accordingly. Carry water and snacks. Lunch is optional. There is no sign-up required. A state parks pass or daily pass is required to enter the park. The DFO Field Trip for Wednesday, August 14 will be a Treasure Hunt, probably to northeast Colorado. Meet at 0530, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, 6060 North Broadway – Exit I-25 at 58th Ave, go west 2 blocks to Broadway, then north 2 blocks to parking lot on right. The leader will find the map to the buried treasures the night before, and we’ll follow it, dig up some Doubloons, march across mud and sand-flats to see shorebirds and through knee high smart-weed to look for early migrants. All day trip, returning with loot and chiggers to the CPW by 5 or 6 p.m.. Bring your pirate jokes, bins, consider bringing rubber boots, water, lunch, etc, — leave your cutlasses at home.
