I just received a call from Janeal Thompson. She talked to the Division
Wildlife Manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife in Springfield which is
60ish miles south of Lamar. This man has been put in charge of the tree
cutting at the Black Hole area. All decisions being made are directed by
the State Dept. of Water Resources engineers for tree cutting. All trees
"in" the canal are to be cut down so that repairs can be made for the
canal. Due to the flooding during the monsoon rains, many trees fell over
and into the canal. The DWM did not yet know whether trees "along" the
canal will be cut down. So far, the trees around the Black Hole itself
will not be cut down. The DWM also told Janeal that there is a tremendous
trash problem in the Black Hole area and the people who dump and leave
their trash will now be ticketed. They are going to patrol that area 7
times per day so don't be surprised if you are approached. There is a
faction who is taking over the area with alcohol and who knows what else so
they are going to take control of that problem as quickly as possible.
This will be a big job and there will be a lot of activity down there so be
prepared. The dam is not in tip top shape and there is some seepage below
the dam and some underground pipelines will need to be repaired and/or
replaced. Feel free to email me privately if you have an questions
[email protected] Thanks to Dave Leatherman for posting for us last
evening.
