Dick Filby and I did the mountain lakes loop today, weather was not as good as Saturday but we had many good birds. We skipped Turquoise Lake and started at Mount Elbert Forebay. The Surf Scoter was still present along a male and female Barrow’s Goldeneye. The wind blew hard at Twin Lakes and Clear Creek Reservoirs with no special birds. I had never visited Ice Lake in Buena Vista and was pleasantly surprised, lots of waterfowl with 9 Barrow’s Goldeneyes 5m/4f. In South Park the wind was a big problem with gale force winds at Antero Res. There were hundreds of birds at Antero bobbing around in the white-capped waves but who knows what was really there, we did find a Common Loon in the NE corner of the lake. Elevenmile and Spinney were less windy but had fewer birds, 8 or 10 Barrow’s Goldeneyes and a Common Loon at Elevenmile. Dick found two Surf Scoters at Spinney (SE corner) bouncing in the waves as we prepared to leaved to leave for home.
