I spent a few hours at Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR yesterday, and I was blown away by the number of birds present. Maybe that's normal for this time of year, but I've never seen anything like it. The diversity was low, but there were huge flocks (in the thousands) of gulls, crows, and starlings. I spent a long time studying the gull flocks--which were forming big gyres in different parts of the refuge and covering the reservoir--but I couldn't pull out anything unusual. That being said, I am poor and don't have a scope. If you have one and are looking for a fun afternoon activity, head over to the Arsenal and play Where's Waldo with the gulls. It's quite a spectacle.
