I got here last Thursday night (6/5/14). Except for the drive down, believe it
or not, it has been been cool, rainy, and windy pretty much the whole time.
Lamar and surrounding terrain is GREEN for the first time in several years.
That means in a few weeks there will probably be mosquitoes and chiggers, but
for now, it seems wonderful. I wore a jacket today, all day, in the middle of
June in Lamar. Is there a RWA (Rare Weather Alert) comparable to the RBA? If
so, I may report it.
Highlights of the visit so far:
Northern Bobwhite (heard at least a couple) along the Arkansas River e of the
Prowers CR13 bridge, about 5 miles e of Walmart, 6/9
Red-headed Woodpecker (SR196 e of May Valley Road and also heard today at Lamar
Community College Woods
Northern Cardinal (two nests observed and suspect a third within the LCC Woods)
Sandhill Crane (1, alone or nesting locally?) in a field s of SR196 about a
mile e of the Lamar Historical Museum
Yellow-billed Cuckoo (2, foraging together at the south end of the LCC Woods
(yesterday and today, suspect they will nest)
Broad-tailed Hummingbird (1 male) coming to blooming TX red yucca and a feeder,
Willow Creek Subdvn. last few days
Black-chinned Hummingbird (male coming to feeder, Willow Creek Subdvn., and
female on a nest at the south end of the LCC Woods)
Swainson's Thrush (1, suspect "russet-backed", so-so photos) north end of LCC
Woods on 6/6
Least Tern (2) near Northgate Park e of the Cow Palace Motel at north end of
Main Street, Lamar 6/6 thru today
Lesser Goldfinch (heard in Willow Creek Subdvn. and at LCC)
Ruddy Duck (2), private gravel ponds ne of Cow Palace on 6/6
Warbling Vireo (several, they sound "eastern" to me but maybe Lamar is too far
east of their distributional epicenter of Boulder)
Red-tailed Hawk (suspect a Krider's - unmarked underparts (including throat),
seen only briefly over LCC)
Black Tern (1) private gravel ponds ne of Cow Palace on 6/9
Wood Duck (1 pair) ditch on s side of US50 about a mile e of Walmart
Red-bellied Woodpecker (few at LCC, heard at Fairmount Cemetery)
Dickcissel (few) west of Lamar in Bent County, various alfalfa fields
Lowlight
NO Golden-winged Warbler at LCC
Chased Duane's female Common Ground-Dove w of the dam on the south side of John
Martin Res (Bent) to no avail. Great bird. The area is huge, didn't really
expect to find it, and just a thrill to have a chance to try for it.
Am going to attempt doing my Ninaview and Villagreen BBS Routes in the next few
days. Not sure what to expect in the way of roads being passable. Such is
southeastern CO.
