I took a lunch break from the trials and tribulations of work and walked
along the paved Poudre River bike trail
on the east side of Forth Collins. As I mentally took note of the common
cast of characters that were seen and
calling, I heard the plaintive call of an Eastern Wood-peewee. I tracked it
down in the riparian area 40 yards
north-northwest of the bridge that goes over Spring Creek. It would favor
an area closer to the river than to the
paved bike path. The bird would give its three-note classic call 2-3 times
and then follow this once with the
two-note down-slurred call. It did this the whole time I was there (10-15
minutes).
To get to this area, park in the parking lot on the west side of the river
at the Prospect Road
bridge over the river. Head along the paved path towards the left as you
are looking at the river. Go past the
junction with the Spring Creek trail and continue right along the paved
Poudre bike trail. Go over the bridge
over Spring Creek and continue another 50-55 yards. There is an old
overgrown trail/roadway to the right
towards the river. Take this. At the river, there is a dirt trail that
continues downstream towards the right.
Along this dirt trail about 40-50 feet, there is a slight opening in the
wooded area. The bird was in the taller
cottonwood trees in this spot.
