Earlier this summer, the answering machine for the Rare Bird Alert phone
line broke down. The answering machine and dedicated phone line were housed
at Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory. It was funded through Denver Field
Ornithologists by donations. It was updated daily by a dedicated group of
volunteers (Joyce Takamine, Joe Roller, Allison Hilf, and others).

The number of users has declined as more birders have turned to the
internet and Cobirds which provides a more timely delivery of information.

In light of this situation, the Board of Directors of Denver Field
Ornithologists voted today to end support of the RBA phone line. Volunteers
will continue to maintain the RBA on Cobirds.

A suggestion has been made that Cobirds users who know a fellow birder who
does not have internet access may want to offer to share RBA information
with that other birder.

The RBA phone line has served Colorado birders well since it was first
housed in Lynn Willcockson's home. Today, Cobirds continues to fill that
role.
