All,

Thanks to Robb for posting. If you want a close study of different scoter
species of differing ages, I recommend a trip to Prospect Lake, part of
Memorial Park in Colorado Springs (accessible via Union Blvd). Especially good
is the open water near the swim beach on the western shoreline. There are
actually 2 White-winged (feathering down onto the bill), 2 Surf (one juvenile
without the white patch on the back of its head but without feathering on its
bill), and one female Black Scoter. One of each species eventually came into a
narrow opening very close to shore. When a Bald Eagle flew overhead the
juvenile Surf Scoter flew up onto the ice and for a few seconds it was a lot
“like a duck out of water.” There were some scoter fights too, all individuals
interested in crawdads.

I'm back at work now but Bill sent me a text saying that there are 3 WW, 1
Black, and 1 Surf. 5 Scoters in a tiny patch of water near shore. It doesn't
get any better than this.
