There is a little open water in Smith Lake at Washington Park, near S Franklin St and East Exposition in east Denver. I checked it briefly about noon today and there were about a dozen Herring Gulls there, mostly adults, and other age groups. This is surprising, as past high count for Herrings here is about 2. There was a beautiful juvy Thayer's Gull and an adult Thayer's. Photographers might want to know that the gulls were confiding and close to shore, where scoff-laws were tossing bread to the Mallards.
As I was leaving, Charles Thornton-Kolbe strolled by and admire the lards and pointed out a Black-crowned Night Heron next to the bandstand.
