Hello, Birders.

I wasn't going to post about the great swirling masses of rosy-finches that
Graham Etherington and I saw this windy Saturday morning, Jan. 17, in
Allenspark and Ward, Boulder County...but then I felt this terrible poking
sensation in my eyes...hadn't felt that way since Joe Roller referred me to
a voodoo specialist friend of his...

In a nutshell, the rosies were better in Lower Ward than in Allenspark. In
Lower Ward, Graham and I saw at least 130, on the ground along the road and
also in the low pines by the street. Two Blacks, about 10 Brown-caps, about
25 Gray-crowns, and the rest Hepburn's. Also a singing Pine Grosbeak here
and a smattering of Evening Grosbeaks. Allenspark had 75 rosies, most of
which didn't land while we were there. But a few Brown-caps did, along with
some Hepburns, one Gray-crown, and one Black. Also at Allenspark were Type
2 Red Crossbills, and about 20 Evening Grosbeaks.

On the drive down from Ward, Graham and I stopped off at Heil Valley Ranch.
While I was entertaining the thought of not posting to COBirds about the
Ward and Allenspark rosies, a flock of Pygmy Nuthatches assaulted me and
tried to peck my eyes out! Audio here:

Joe mentioned the virtues of posting rosy-finch reports to COBirds and to
eBird, and I concur. Please also consider participating in CFO's active
Facebook group, where you can post your great photos of rosy-finches. Or,
in my case, not-so-great photos, like this guy:

A public service announcement: Boulder County's rosy-finches have this
habit of frequenting feeders on private property. The owners are gracious
to birders. As always, we birders should be respectful of both the birds'
and the homeowners' rights. Watch from a distance, don't be loud, park
safely and legally, etc.
