Yesterday (Jan 20) I visited some areas in Elbert County along Highway 86 from the vicinity of Elizabeth to a short way east of the town of Kiowa. Type 2 *Red Crossbills *and *Red-breasted Nuthatches* were frequent in Ponderosa forest around Elizabeth. Two highlights in the forest along Park Lane on the eastern side of town were 2 *Evening Grosbeaks* and 2 *Cassin's Finches*. A small flock of *Bushtits* was at the cemetery. Outside of town I saw a *Merlin*, and a *White-winged Junco*. A *Ruby-crowned Kinglet* was at Kiowa. A pair of *Common Ravens* was east of Kiowa along Wedermeyer Road. And more *Red Crossbills* were in pines in that area, but fewer than at Elizabeth as few trees had cones.
