The Monte Refuge has bountiful numbers of Sandhill Cranes, Canada, Cackling, Snow and Ross’ Geese, Mallards, Pintails, Ring-necked Ducks and many Bald Eagles watching them closely. The refuge still has snow cover which has affected usual feeding and roosting patterns. Best place at the moment is on Hwy 15, 1 mile south of the Headquarters at the turnouts.
One particular bird caught my attention yesterday was a leucistic Cackling Goose. This bird has the normal head and neck of the Cackling, but the body is white. A few tail feathers are dark. This bird was likely the same one I saw about 3 years ago. So be on the lookout. Monte Vista Crane Festival is March 13-15 and there should be plenty to see. Google the Crane Festival for a schedule of events. John Rawinski Monte Vista, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
