Birders,
I was able to help Janeal Thompson see and photograph the single female-plumaged Purple and Cassin's Finches at my Las Animas feeder yesterday. It was not surprising the birds were here due to the cold, snowy conditions. She saw and photographed both. I did not post these sightings to cobirds due to the unfortunate twin realities that my feeders have been taken over by Red-winged Blackbirds and I can only put about a cup of seeds on the platform feeder on the west side of my house and stand by the window to deter the blackbirds as the finches feed, and that I am not home during most of the day as I'm busy trying to prepare nesting habitat for Piping Plovers at John Martin Reservoir. I returned home from work today and put a cup of black oil sunflower seeds on my feeder at around 4 p.m. Within minutes, the Purple Finch appeared for a single visit. I assume it was around most of the day looking for a handout. I'll try to work with interested birders interested in trying for my finches. I've got to know in advance that you're coming.
