Last evening, Mike McCloy and I decided to head up to Cameron Pass to look
for Boreal Owls. We parked at the parking area for the Nokhu Crags and
hiked to the east and then got on a trail that took us up to the Michigan
Ditch Road around the time it was getting dark. It wasn't completely dark
before we heard our first Boreal Owl which we ended up getting excellent
looks at after a lot of patience. We heard a total of three Boreal Owls in
the valley to the southeast of where Highway 14 makes the sharp turn from
running North-South to East-West on the Jackson County side of the pass.
These birds were all about a mile from the nearest point on Highway 14, but
it might be possible to hear them on a still night. We did not hear any
more owls on the hike back until we got to the parking area where we heard
another bird. At one point the bird was very close to our car, but it
seemed to be moving around a lot and only calling occasionally.

Good Birding!
