The Spring banding season at Chico Basin Ranch opened April
23rd. The herculean task of clearing tumbleweeds from the net lanes proved
not insurmountable for CBR staff and many courageous volunteers who came out to
do battle so that the station could be opened. My sincere thanks to all of
you for the truly amazing work. Thus far we have banded
116 birds of 18 species. We caught our
first-ever Prairie Warbler on Tuesday and the bird was seen again today. Also
today, we caught a female Hooded Warbler,
our 11th individual since 2002. The first two Swainson’s Thrushes arrived on
Tuesday. Our earliest capture date for this species
was April 26th, during 2005.
Since then, we’ve had April Swainson’s again in 2006, 2007, and 2008
only; most show up after May 10th.
