To continue the conversation about Common Nighthawk: We've had some
movement of this bird through central Denver over the past week. Last
Wednesday evening (June 3), in advance of one of our many thunderstorms, I
noticed two flying over the Governor's Mansion (E. 8th Ave & Logan).

The next day, my dog and I walked to Cheesman Park with the hope of seeing
a nighthawk there. We arrived around 7:00 PM, which I thought might be too
early to encounter this bird. Happily, I spotted one perched on a tree,
about 18-20 feet up, on the southern edge of the park. We watched it for a
few minutes, during which it unleashed it's call. I didn't realize how loud
the call is when you're close to bird. Even my dog, who isn't much for
birding, stopped in his tracks and stared. On our way out through Little
Cheesman, a group of at least 17 nighthawk foraged high above the city. A
few hours later, another storm rolled in, this one dropping hail.
