Today (Sunday) I found 2 male Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 1 male Red-naped Sapsucker and 2 female Williamson's Sapsuckers around Canon City. Usually sapsuckers can be found earlier in the fall in Canon City but not this year. Given the late date I expect these sapsuckers are not migrating but are here to over winter. Every winter 2-3 of these sapsucker species overwinter in Canon City where the temperatures do not generally get far below zero so the sapsuckers are able to drill into trees for food. I have uploaded pics of the Red-naped Sapsucker to my Birds and Nature blog <http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/> but will have to wait until tomorrow to upload pics of the other sapsuckers.
I also saw several distant Greater White-fronted Geese with a large flock of Canada Geese in the agricultural fields off of MacKenzie Ave. I saw them for the first time yesterday and again today but still too distant to get photos.
