Hello, Birders.

Everybody's signed up now for one or more Colorado CBCs, right? Okay, now
what? Here's an idea: *Join Colorado Field Ornithologists and Yours Truly
for a pre-CBC field workshop, Sat., Dec. 12, 9am till noonish, at Greeenlee
Preserve, Boulder County.* Our primary focus will be on common, even
abundant, birds that can be surprisingly hard to ID on count day--and any
other day of the year, for that matter.

We'll learn how to distinguish between Canada geese and cackling geese
<https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.10153086326952038&type=1>;
we'll try to make sense out of Cassiar juncos and even Ridgway's juncos
<https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.10153086318532038&type=1>; and,
just for fun, we'll learn how to age ring-billed gulls
<https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.10153087471367038&type=1> (with
an eye toward finding a mew gull or something). And as time allows, we'll
look for some of the recent goodies at Greenlee Preserve and adjoining
Waneka Lake: gray catbird, greater white-fronted goose, merlin, bushtit,
and, everybody's favorite, African collared-dove.

Of course, we'll cover some of the basics: counting birds in large flocks;
what to do about hybrids and spuhs; signing up for the Boulder CBC, I mean,
any CBC of your choosing; protocol for paying proper homage to your
compiler . . .

*This workshop is free and open to the public.* All persons welcome; no
prior experience necessary. If you've never heard of a Ridgway's Junco,
come and learn; if you know how to ID a Ridgway's Junco, please explain it
to the rest of us. On-street parking available immediately west of the
preserve (Salina Street & vicinity). We will assemble at 9am at the
observation deck at the southwest corner of Greenlee Preserve.
