This is the 4th year in a row that I have had a Northern Goshawk winter in my neighborhood. I was first alerted to it calling at sunrise back in 2012 outside my home office every morning. This year, it is putting on quite a show for me. Most days I am in my home office where the entire eastern side is floor to ceiling windows overlooking my bird feeders and water feature. For the past couple weeks, he has centered his activity right in front of my windows; chasing birds, being mobbed by ravens, and perching on powerlines and the tops of firs and pines.
Yesterday, while perched on the power line outside my office, it let me sneak out and snap off a couple hundred photos. I have yet to see it actually make a kill, but I did see it flash by my window last week with something in its talons.
