Hundreds of Brown-crested and Black Rosy-Finches are visiting a farm south of
Monte Vista NWR in Rio Grande County. I also spotted Gray-crowned in the
crowd. Of interest on Jan. 24 ground at the same farm was a gull, tentatively
being identified as a Bonaparte’s Gull, which would be highly unusual in this
season. There may be more info coming later from better authorities about this
gull. Also saw Northern Goshawk over farmland south of the refuge and a
Sharpie on wire. The first cranes of the season should be showing up in the San
Luis Valley in about a week if true to usual schedule.
