In his talk to DFO on February 22, Dr. Garth M. Spellman, Curator of
Ornithology at DMNS, will explore the anatomy of the avian vocal structure,
the syrinx, and its potential as a musical instrument as well as its
similarities with human-made instruments. He will play recordings of birdsong
that uses musical scales commonly used in human music and juxtapose the
birdsong with musical pieces inspired by the same birdsong. Finally he will
discuss birdsong as communication and evaluate what message the signaler is
trying to send and what qualities of the message the recipient is evaluating.
Denver Field Ornithologists meet 4th Monday at 7:30 at Denver Museum of Nature
& Science. Park on the north side and enter through the security door.
Meetings are FREE and open to the public. Mary Cay Burger, DFo Membership10826
