Stephany McNew and I got to Lake Holbrook, east of Rocky Ford, Otero County, around 7:25am (on 19 April 2016). We started in the NW corner of the lake, and couldn't find the Hudsonian Godwit. We found plenty of other shorebirds and other birds. Then we went to North East corner, and saw 15 Marbled Godwits, without any small godwit with them. We checked the pond just east of Holbrook, and then went back to the NE Corner, looking at the Marbled Godwits again, thinking the Hudsonian isn't here. We went back to the NW corner, where Dan Stringer and other birder were looking at the Hudsonian Godwit! Not sure where it was when we were there the first time, it was right in front on the return visit. Dan described a shorebird with a black belly, so we thought it must be a Dunlin. Stephany was able to pick it out of the peep flock (Western, Semipalmated, and Least Sandpipers all there), plus Semipalmated and Snowy Plovers. A Peregrine Falcon and a Merlin were at Lake Holbrook this morning too. On the Reservoir, a breeding plumaged Common Loon, a female Hooded Merganser were present. A very productive morning, hope the other birders who went looking for these birds, were able to see them.
