Today at Grandview Cemetery at the west terminus of Mountain Avenue in Fort
Collins (Larimer) were 3 Broad-winged Hawks. The first was a dark morph
flyover and the other two were light morph birds, at least one of which was an
adult. They seem pretty much on schedule and always seem to prefer the large
deciduous trees in the open grown part of the southeast corner of the cemetery
(Section 8), especially the State Champion Thornless Honeylocust for those
familiar with it.
In the neighborhood just east of the cemetery along Frey Avenue just south of
Laporte Avenue I had a FOY for the cemetery area Broad-tailed Hummingbird
female.
A huge, raucous flock of goldfinches and siskins is in flowering and seeding
trees around the entrance (i.e. over the old Office).
The winds also supported the following flyovers: 90 or so Franklin's Gulls, 2
Turkey Vultures, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, the aforementioned Broad-winged Hawks,
and at least 3 Red-tailed Hawks.
Since I get asked rather frequently, the "2016 Grandview Cemetery
Love-'Em-To-Death Great Horned Owl Show" for this year has been cancelled due
to nest failure during the snowstorm before last.
