This afternoon 5/15 I made an abbreviated circuit of the Pawnee Grasslands,
stopping at Norma's Grove, Crow Valley Campground, and the auto tour in the
reverse direction. Norma's Grove had two Swainson's Thrushes rather than 30
(what I could see from WCR 100, anyway) and no Gray-cheeked, but I did see a
Northern Waterthrush, a Green-tailed Towhee, and a Hammond's Flycatcher. The
auto tour was great for sparrows, including a singing Grasshopper. The
campground is flooded as people have mentioned, and boots are a necessity for
getting around. Birds were most active around the picnic shelter (Plumbeous
Vireo, Dusky Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee, Lazuli Bunting). Good birds for
the area were a Veery, a Red-headed Woodpecker, a Gray-headed Junco, and a
Spotted Sandpiper. Ducks included Mallard, Gadwall, and Blue-winged Teal. I was
happy not to be roasting, but April is so over with.
