Greetings, The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies will be compiling data for the eighteenth annual Barrow’s Goldeneye (BAGO) count again this year. In 2016, we will be accepting data collected 26 November through 11 December. The reason for this count is to monitor the wintering population of this species in Colorado. It is possible that all BAGO in the state during this time period represent the Colorado breeding population, however, no one knows for certain if some of the BAGO migrate from Wyoming or further north. The Flat Tops Wilderness Area (and the recently discovered breeding pair near Mount Evans!) is the farthest south this species breeds in North America.
We appreciate any reports of BAGO in Colorado during the count period. We encourage everyone to enter their count totals into the eBird database. I will check eBird for BAGO reported during this time period for those of you that don't post on CoBirds or WSBN. Or, you can send count totals to me at this e-mail address or jason DOT beason AT birdconservancy DOT org.
