If you happen to be at Chatfield, make sure you check the field between the west entrance and the horse stable road. This summer, it was wildly overgrown with sunflowers, and now it’s full of sunflower seeds and sparrows. This morning there were dozens of goldfinches, many tree sparrows, white-crowned sparrows, song sparrows, house finches, and at least 1 imm. Harris’ sparrow. Also present last evening and early this morning was a northern shrike, though I didn’t see that after about 9AM. Best bird of the morning was a fly-over Sandhill Crane spotted by Art Hudak. I don’t think they eat sunflower seeds, so don’t count on that remaining in the area.
