On Sunday, I heard what I believe was a singing Gray Catbird along the High Line Canal Trail in Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve (Greenwood Village [Arapahoe Co.]). Terrible recordings are here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S34326693. I returned to look for it Monday evening and heard it once but couldn't locate it. The bird sounded as if it was singing not from the trail, but from among the private residences surrounding it. The Red-tails at Marjorie Perry have been very active lately; the spot is usually good for 3-4 sightings, including a Harlan's who has spent much of this winter (and perhaps last's) in the area.
Elsewhere this weekend, my dog and I followed a half dozen or so alert Black-capped Chickadees to an Eastern Screech-Owl, twenty or so feet up a tree -- far higher than I'd previously found them perched. Am I misreading their sudden presence feeding and calling together, after a winter of seeing only one at a time, or is the timing right? And my bird bath is suddenly the most popular stop in town. Dozens of robins have been visiting it around sunset, taking turns (5-9 of them at a time). In less happy news, at least for the bird in question...there are many Collared Doves in my neighborhood. Since switching to a "no mess" bird seed, two have been frequent visitors to my feeders.
