Hello Colorado Birders: Despite a chilly start to the day and high winds, George Steele and I enjoyed four hours of productive birding around Miramonte Reservoir yesterday. At first glance, it seemed pretty quiet on the open water but by scanning each cove, we managed to tally a pretty fun list by the time we were done.
Most of the shorebirds were concentrated in the southernmost cove, which we became aware of thanks to an immature Bald Eagle putting them all up at once. Unquestionably, seeing a flock of 22 Marbled Godwits in good light was the shorebird highlight. A drake Wood Duck and a drake "Mexican" Mallard were the waterfowl standouts. The complete list with photos can be observed at: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S36454009 Back home in Telluride last night, the conditions seemed favorable so I ventured out onto the valley floor for some listening at dusk. The Wilson's Snipe became really active around 8:30 p.m. and the cacophony of "ticks," "flick-aa," and winnowing overhead was thrilling. A Virginia Rail gave its "kiddick" call throughout and I heard a single "whinny" from a Sora. A Great Horned Owl did a little hooting about 45 minutes after sunset.
