Hey COBirders, Nothing rare to report for banding at Clear Spring Ranch today - but some interesting notes.
It was a typical opening - several birds at dawn, some recaps from previous days, mostly sparrows, then real quiet. This has been the pattern for a week here. Then about 9:00 activity picked up significantly. In addition to the arrival of many warblers at that time, large flocks of other birds were passing overhead, flying S down Fountain Creek. The most dramatic were 165 Blue Jays, one flock of over 75, all moving S. Also 10 flickers (one obvious Yellow-shafted), 75 Red-winged Blackbirds, a bunch of Spotted Towhees, 45 Gadwall circling over the marsh before landing, and the 185 Canada Geese - but they are in the field every morning, and leave about 10:30. FOS today - 2 Hatch Year male Audubon’s Warblers (I have only banded 2 other AUWAs in the previous 5 falls), and not rare, but my First-at-CSR Mountain Chickadee (Hatch Year also). 29 birds total today.
