We start this season with a timely presentation about Monarch Butterflies and their migrations:
7:15 p.m., September, 26, 2017 Unitarian-Universalist Church, 5001 Pennsylvania Avenue, Boulder, CO Evi Buckner-Opler Presents: Monarch Butterflies: Natural History, Migration and Conservation The Monarch is the most widely recognized and beloved butterfly species and it is in trouble. Pesticides, habitat loss and deforestation have all conspired to reduce their population to a fraction of what it once was. Their decline has been fast and precipitous. Evi Buckner-Opler’s illustrated presentation will primarily feature her own images. She will explain the Monarch’s natural history and tell of their amazing migrations. Evi will also suggest ways in which we can all help the plight of this iconic butterfly to insure its survival. Recently, the Monarch has reached a higher level of prominence due to a petition by the Xerces Society and other environmental groups, directed to the Secretary of Interior asking that this species be recognized as a United States Threatened Species under provisions of the Endangered Species Act. Evi Buckner-Opler is an accomplished lecturer, photographer, and artist. She was born in Oberammergau, Germany. She has lived in Colorado since 1976, and became intrigued with butterflies, especially Monarchs, after she met and married renowned lepidopterist, Paul Opler. Many of the photos are of images taken on Evi and Paul’s trip to the Monarch overwintering sites in Michoacán, Mexico.
